CHATEAU CALISSANNE

In 2001, Philippe Kessler acquired “Château Calissanne” and decided to restructure the estate, both the vineyards and the olive groves, and to extend and modernize the winery and ageing cellars in order to improve the quality of the wines. Meticulous care and attention to detail are the hallmarks of this territory. Today, his wife Sophie Kessler-Matière and son Thomas are continuing the work begun by Philippe Kessler and continue to develop the two vineyards, Château Calissanne in A.O.P. Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence with the famous Clos Victoire and Rocher Rouge, and Domaine de la Clef de Saint-Thomas in A.O.C. Châteauneuf-du-Pape with its two cuvées, La Clef de St Thomas and Pierre Troupel. Attached to their terroir and the environment, they are committed to particularly environmentally-friendly approaches. Thanks to their responsible approach, Château Calissanne was awarded “High Environmental Value” 3 certification for all its products in early 2019. A vineyard on hillsides, a plot-by-plot selection. For each terroir, a grape variety and a wine... At Château Calissanne, we work on 4 blocks, each made up of several parcels (25 in all). This parcel-by-parcel selection is based on terroir and grape variety. - Lieu-dit (ilot) Les Fourches, located on a high, south-facing slope, on a clay-limestone terroir with good soil depth, and clay at depth, limestone on the surface. We cultivate a parcel of Mourvèdre grapes at the Rocher Rouge site. Here we produce the Rocher Rouge cuvée, a mineral expression of this fine terroir. We also grow Syrah grapes for our Clos Victoire and Château Calissanne red wines. - Lieu-dit (plot) Les Chalets, still on the top of the estate, south-facing, in relief, with limestone and stony soil. Cabernet dominates, producing Clos Victoire. - Sainte Modeste, la gare, south-west facing part of the estate, with limited production, low yields and shallow, clay-limestone soil. We like to use these Grenache and Syrah grapes to make our Château Calissanne rosés. - Chemin Blanc plot, exposed on fine, light, sandy-clay soils. Terroir perfectly suited to our fruity, round Terres de Provence wines.
